In Their Own Story

The observatory floated in the quiet dark between two spiral arms, a ring of pale crystal that caught no light and gave none. Inside, a young initiate pressed her forehead to the cold glass and watched a nebula the color of bruised plums slowly unfurl a new filament of gas. It had been unfurling for three hundred years. She had been watching it for three days. "You are impatient," said a voice behind her. The Elder did not turn from her own station, where a dying star was being coaxed, thread by thread, into a gentler fade. "The nebula does not care that you are watching."

"I know," the initiate whispered. "But the Council sent word. Something is wrong in the southern arm. The light is… stuttering."

The Elder was quiet for a long time. Then: "Then we will wait. And when the stutter becomes a stop, we will sing it back. That is our work. Not to fix. To remember how the light was supposed to go."

Outside, the nebula turned, indifferent and ancient, and the young fairy let her breath fog the glass and watched the fog clear.
